Hugo Paris
French-born and LA-based, Hugo Paris uniquely melds genres and disciplines into a seamless tapestry of sound, infused with profound philosophical concepts and raw, heartfelt emotions.
Exceptional musician and instrument inventor, Hugo Paris' artistic
expression extends far beyond conventional boundaries. He led the
conception and development of a novel poly-timbral synthesizer that
continues to capture the imagination of artists worldwide, including the
late, pioneering composer Vangelis. He has written four accomplished
and critically acclaimed albums, contributed to groundbreaking Nobel
prize-winning project LIGO, provided the children of the San Francisco
Benioff Hospital with music therapy sessions, and continues to offer
guidance to younger artists through platforms such as the GRAMMY U
mentorship program - But Hugo Paris' path has been anything but
conventional.
Growing up in rural Provence, Hugo Paris had a modest, contemplative
childhood. Starting off pitch deaf, with money too tight to entertain the
idea of pursuing a proper musical education, he also faced indomitable
resistance to his musical aspirations within his parental upbringing.
Unwilling to accept that a dearth of tools, lack of knowledge, and
household resistance were a barrier to self-expression, he found solace
immersing himself in genres rooted in raw power and overdriven tones.
Practicing in secret, he made use of minimal set-ups, discarded home
computers, portable recorders and found sounds, until he could
eventually speak through guitars, keyboards, percussions, tape loops, modular synths, and just about anything he can get his hands on, always with the mantra “expressivity over perfection”.
Prevented from pursuing a musical path during his younger years, he
first pulled himself closest to his dreams with a Masters in Vibrations
Acoustics and Signal Processing. Failing student prior, Hugo Paris defied
all expectations with exceptional academic results, and went on to work
for world-renowned institutions such as MIT, Caltech and Stanford
University on the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave
Observatory, which received the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics - all while
establishing a career as a solo artist in his new home, the U.S.
Hugo Paris’ dedication to innovation was further demonstrated during
his 3 years at 4ms Company, where he spearheaded the development of
the Spherical Wavetable Navigator synthesizer, which was embraced by
artists worldwide and grossed over a Million dollars in international
sales. But for Hugo Paris, true fulfillment could only be found in
introspection and musical expression. Returning to his roots as a
full-time musician, he embarked on a transformative journey, shedding
aliases in favor of his birth name.
His third album Threaded Habitat was again welcomed by major press
outlets, and within months Hugo Paris struck a musical connection with
Joachim Garraud. Hugo Paris was quickly invited on board the renown
producer’s solar-powered bus to write and perform as the mobile
studio toured across California’s deserts. The resulting Modular
California Vibes movie is one of many illustrations of Hugo Paris’
adventurous story - lately culminating with the acclaim of his lates
album Nouvelles Aurores, a touching ambient tour de force featuring
collaborators AMULETS, Nathan Moody, Tyler Stone.
Today, Hugo Paris stands as a beacon of artistic innovation, holding his
journey as a proof to the power of perseverance and the boundless
possibilities of commitment. Continuously inspired by literature, world
cinema and his international lifestyle, Hugo Paris has established
himself as a multifaceted artist, equally at home working with
renowned peers, writing film music, developing sound design,
producing for others, and recording / touring for himself. But, most
importantly, his years of relentless resilience have led his loved ones to
embrace his aspirations and sealed his vow to empower younger lives in
their path to self-expression.
